Gone are the days of eating SALAD to “Nurse the Figure” Lol !!! Salad , as Light as it may seem has tons of benefits, today we focus on the impact it has on your skin ! 
1. SALAD CAN INCREASE YOUR HYDRATION LEVELS : 

Most veggies are majority water, so when you eat them you naturally hydrate your body.  Despite the fact that we know we’re supposed to drink a lot of water many people still don’t get enough, making consumption of moisture-rich foods a way to add hydration to your system.  When your body is dehydrated so is your skin.  Dehydrated skin can have an increase in roughness, sensitivity, flaking, and fine lines or even cracking.  Both for appearances and comfort and dealing with summer’s warm temperatures hydration is required, making fruits and veggies a great way to send your skin the liquid it longs for to perform and look its best.
2. RAW FOODS IN SALADS MEAN NO LOSS OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS DUE TO COOKING: 

When you’re eating uncooked foods you’re giving your body a shot at the maximum vitamins and nutrients available in many foods.  It’s a rare food that remains unchanged by cooking – only certain very stable nutrients don’t degrade or migrate out of foods when they’re heated.  The actual percentage of raw foods you should consume remains something many experts debate.  Overall though it’s safe to say that eating some is one of the best ways to make sure every bite is adding a lot of nutrients to your system.  Raw foods also contain live enzymes that can assist with digestion, something cooked foods don’t boast since enzymes are destroyed by heat.
3. FIBER IN VEGETABLES AND FRUITS USED FOR SALADS CLEAN THE INTESTINES AND COLON , MAKING NUTRIENT ABSORPTION MORE EFFICIENT :

If your intestines are gummed up with gooey, fiber-free, processed foods they aren’t going to be properly absorbing nutrition.  Almost every ingredient in a salad contributes fiber that sweeps through the digestive system, carrying leftover gunk with it and leaving intestinal and colon walls free to absorb all the virtuous vitamins you’re eating every day.  What good is a nutrient if it never really gets into you?  Not much.

We’re all supposed to get approximately 25 grams of fiber in our diets per day.  Sadly most people fall far, far short. 

2 cups of lettuce equals .9 to 2 grams of fiber depending on the variety with delicate green leaf lettuce. 

Other salad additions like carrots, peppers, celery, tomatoes, beets, asparagus, mushrooms, and green peas can really bulk up your fiber intake and also make your salads more interesting.  
4. USE OF QUALITY OILS IN SALAD DRESSINGS CAN IMPROVE ABSORPTION OF NUTRIENTS AND PROVIDE MOISTURIZING, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY OMEGA FATTY ACIDS THAT BENEFIT SKIN: 

This point requires some specificity.  Dressings acquired from most average grocery stores are not going to qualify for this healthy advantage.  That’s because they are made with refined canola and soy oils that may be partly rancid, contain pesticide residue, and have no vitamins of their own.  Mass market dressings also commonly contain artificial colors, high fructose corn syrup, and other ickies.  Either make a visit to your local health food store or order up some individual ingredients and make your own unique and healthful dressing instead.

Salad offers the opportunity for culinary use of oils not generally suited for cooking like hemp seed oil, walnut oil, and pumpkin seed oil.  The oils most packed with polyunsaturated fatty acids (Omega fatty acids) are the ones you can’t heat because heat makes them oxidize, so cold applications are the best way to get their anti-inflammatory health benefits and delicious flavor.  Organic sunflower and olive oils are fine general purpose choices as well if you don’t have specialty oils on hand.

Oils will increase your absorption of beta-Carotene and Vitamin K which are fat soluble.  A bit of healthy oil can also improve your feeling of satisfaction and how long your energy from the meal will last, since fats take a while to break down into caloric energy.  The veggies will digest first and the fat will fuel you later.

Omega fatty acid rich oils provide balancing, anti-inflammatory effects for skin with positive results for dry skin and acne specifically.  Ironically consuming more Omega 3 fatty acids in healthy oils can make you break out less.
5. NUTRIENTS IN SALADS HELP SYNTHESIZE COLLAGEN , PROVIDE NATURAL SUN PROTECTIVE EFFECTS, PROTECT AGAINST WRINKLING AND SAGGING OF SKIN, CAN IMPROVE DARK UNDER EYE CIRCLES, AND MAKE SKIN SMOOTHER: 
Look, Some of the individual nutrients you get when eating exciting and varied salads.  There’s a lot, and their benefits are well substantiated by peer reviewed science!

Shhhh We have exercises men will love

I’m a huge fan of this thing called “Having unrestricted OPEN conversations” ! 

This week , my male friends decided to GRILL me about exercises that could improve their sex lives … in guessing clearly it’s “Dololo” right now ! *Hides* LMAO ! 

Ok so I did some research, asked a few questions and then bumped into THIS :

Move over, Viagra: Regular exercise could be the best medicine for a man to improve his sex life.

Yes by now , You know that working out is good for your health. Especially if you are a regular on this BLOG 🤣!! But did you know that hitting the gym could also help you have better sex? “Working out three to four times a week can do a lot to help your sexual technique, flexibility, and endurance,” says Pete McCall, MS, an exercise physiologist and personal trainer for the American Council on Exercise (ACE). 

So what types of exercise are best for better sex?  

Dear men … we have news !

Better Sex Exercise No. 1: 

WEIGHT LIFTING :

Strength training could be just what the doctor ordered for your sex life. The reason: “Weight lifting causes the body to produce testosterone, which is the primary precursor for the male sex drive,” says McCall, who recommends lifting enough to feel fatigue by the 10th repetition. In fact, some studies have linked short intense exercise, such as weight lifting, with increased testosterone levels. To improve your sex life, do some push-ups, sit-ups, and crunches. These muscle-building exercises can help lead to better sex by strengthening the shoulders, chest, and abs. Strong upper body strength can increase stamina since these muscles are used during intercourse.

#KHA : Ok. This makes sense ! Hence some of you brothers rock these Push ups & Crunches , just minutes before sex! We get it now , it’s kinda cute 🤣��
Better Sex Exercise No. 2: 

KEGELS : 

Doing Kegels is considered a good sex exercise for men because these exercises can help endurance and control by toning the pubococcygeus (PC) muscles — the ones that let you stop the flow of urine mid-stream. Named after Los Angeles physician Arnold Kegel, they strengthen the muscles in your body’s pelvic floor, which can lead to better sex. “Men can use Kegels to delay ejaculation by contracting these muscles just before orgasm,” says McCall. To do Kegels, start by interrupting the flow of urine when going to the bathroom to get familiar with your PC muscles. After that, you can do Kegels anytime and any place by squeezing the PC muscles. Hold for 10 seconds, relax, and do as many reps as you can before tiring. 

#KHA: Yep ! Dear ladies … we KNOW how this works … right ! This is a huge lesson for me , I had no idea men could also do them “KEGELS” ! Thanks Sir McCall ����

#YOGA :

Want to shake up your sex life with some new positions? Practicing yoga will give you better sex by allowing your body to get into creative positions for maximum pleasure during intercourse. “Yoga will help your flexibility,” which can result in better sex, McCall says. Some experts say it can also improve your stamina in the sack by drawing your energy in and up. McCall recommends yoga poses that improve pelvic muscles, such as the Bow Pose, Peacock Pose (also called the Forearm or Elbow Balance), and Shoulder Stand.

#KHA : YES YES Now you’re speaking my speak McCall !!! YOGA IS KEY … LADIES !!! we finally have thee perfect reason to drag these wonderful guys of ours to a Yoga session , OR he could even rock a home yoga session with you … instead of just watching … in lust ��! #Namaste oh Hubby ����

Better Sex Exercise No. 4: 

FAST WALKING : 

In a study of 31,000 men over age 50, Harvard researchers found that aerobic exercise resulted in a 30-percent lower risk of erectile dysfunction (ED). More specifically, according to another study, aerobic activity that burns at least 200 calories per day (equal to fast walking for two miles) can significantly lower the risk of ED. Brisk walking is thought to help ED by improving circulation and blood flow. “Fast walking, running, and other aerobic activities help your sex life for the same reason that they prevent heart attacks,” says McCall. “They keep your blood vessels clear.” The result can be stronger and longer erections. Vigorous activities, such as running and brisk walking, also release endorphins and relax you, which can boost sexual performance

#KHA : gosh , so I heard of this a few years ago and actually experienced it in couples I coach / teach in my “Dance To Fitness Couples sessions” ! It’s a beautiful experience seeing couples train / dance / run together, they seem more confident in themselves but also in their relationship! They perform better in any given task & I can only imagine their physicality when I’m not present … ! #CoupleGoals , we are inspired!!! 
Better Sex Exercise No. 5: 

SWIMMING : 

In another Harvard study of 160 male and female swimmers, swimmers in their 60s reported sex lives comparable to those in their 40s. Since sexual activity can be an act of endurance, long-distance swimming can keep you going and going like the Energizer bunny. “Swimming for at least 30 minutes three times a week will increase sexual endurance,” says McCall. Swimming is also a great activity for weight loss, which can also lead to better sex. A randomized, single-blind study of 110 obese men with ED found that losing just 10 percent of their body weight improved sexual function in one third of the men. And it’s no secret that losing excess body fat will help attain those six-pack abs and make you more attractive to potential partners. The result: better sex!

#KHA : Dear Black men who don’t swim … please LEARN ! WE NEED YOU IN THAT POOL !!! This point is brilliant especially regarding weight loss. Most men are going to reconsider swimming after reading THIS !!!

It’s #NutritionalWednesday and sure by now you know a few benefits of #GreenTea … but I have to share a few more with you … just to make you green up more often especially as we enter this heated season !!! 

Green tea benefits us in this industry as we have to apply make up often

1. WEIGHT LOSS : 

Green tea increases the metabolism. The polyphenol found in green tea works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories.

2. DIABETES : 

Green tea apparently helps regulate glucose levels slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating. This can prevent high insulin spikes and resulting fat storage.

3. HEART DISEASE : 

Scientists think, green tea works on the lining of blood vessels, helping keep them stay relaxed and better able to withstand changes in blood pressure. It may also protect against the formation of clots, which are the primary cause of heart attacks.

4. ESOPHAGEAL CANCER : It can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer, but it is also widely thought to kill cancer cells in general without damaging the healthy tissue around them.

5. CHOLESTOROL: 

 Green tea reduces bad cholesterol in the blood and improves the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol.

6. ALZHEIMER AND PARKINSONS : 

 It is said to delay the deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies carried out on mice showed that green tea protected brain cells from dying and restored damaged brain cells.

7. TOOTH DECAY : 

Studies suggests that the chemical antioxidant “catechin” in tea can destroy bacteria and viruses that cause throat infections, dental caries and other dental conditions

8. BLOOD PRESSURE : 

Regular consumption of green tea is thought to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

9. DEPRESSION : 

Theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea leaves. It is this substance that is thought to provide a relaxing and tranquilizing effect and be a great benefit to tea drinkers.

10. ANTI- VIRAL and ANTI-BACTERIAL:

 Tea catechins are strong antibacterial and antiviral agents which make them effective for treating everything from influenza to cancer. In some studies green tea has been shown to inhibit the spread of many diseases.

11. SKIN CARE :

 Green tea can apparently also help with wrinkles and the signs of aging, This is because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Both animal and human studies have demonstrated that green tea applied topically can reduce sun damage.

Fun in the sun

I recently had a cellular cellulite chat with my friend (I know you see what I did there …) I realized at the end of our convo that there is no end to body treatment and care , whether it’s for #Cellulite / #StretchMarks. I say stick to treatment/ remedy / training that you can MAINTAIN both financially & physically. I personally prefer natural remedies for my body , hence I felt the need to share this with YOU ! 

WHAT IS CELLULITE : 

“On the surface, cellulite appears as lumpy or dimpled skin. However, the process of developing cellulite is more than skin deep. The puckering of skin happens when the layer of fat beneath the skin pushes against connective tissue and bulges, causing the characteristic orange-peel or cottage cheese appearance.”
Now, let’s analyze what Nutritionist Lisa Guy had to say re: reducing #cellulite, for silky smooth skin.
1. LOAD UP ON ANTI-OXIDANTS : 

Anti oxidants ready for action

Include plenty of antioxidant-rich foods in your diet, such as berries, red and orange fruits and vegies, and citrus fruits. Antioxidants are your number one defence against free radicals, which cause damage to skin cells and can contribute to cellulite formation.

– #KHA : How much of this is on your grocery list ? It’s surely not a pain in your pocket if you get your Naartjies instead of that Full cream ice cream ! Yes?! 
2. GO GREEN : 

Green tea your body

Drinking green tea can help reduce the signs of cellulite. Green tea has been found to be effective for increasing energy expenditure and assisting with weight loss. It is also a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent free radical damage. Drink about three cups of green tea a day. 

#KHA : I’ve been preaching green tea benefits ever since I discovered it’s health benefits over 4 years ago ! Have you tried it ? Do you enjoy the taste ? If not , add a dash of honey , keep reducing the honey with each cup till your palate gets used to the taste honey free ! Deal ?!

3. HEALTHY FATS : 

Replace saturated fats with healthy omega-3 fats such as oily fish, flaxseed and fish oils, and nuts. These help with blood circulation. Poor circulation reduces the body’s ability to deliver nutrients to skin cells, causing them to clump together, which can compound cellulite problems.

– #KHA : The common denominator here is food & blood circulation ! Avoid foods that reduce your blood circulation. Know what those foods are & DELETE THEM! Today ! 
4. EXERCISE:


Regular exercise is vital. It burns calories to reduce fat, boosts circulation and can help disguise cellulite by increasing muscle tone under the skin. Exercise also improves lymphatic drainage, which carries toxins away from cells. If drainage is sluggish it will contribute to cellulite.

#KHA : I’ve always said this , you can’t exercise & then go and eat processed foods / sugary drinks etc which may carry “free radicals” & harmful toxins and no nutrients & expect to feel good . It’s a total LIFESTYLE choice , not a partly , occasional, kancanyane lifestyle decision to impress your “new friends” or bae ! 

Do it wholeheartedly, change your diet , exercise daily , improve your thoughts on self & find your joy ! Deal ?! 

5. CUT OUT TOXINS: 

A build-up of toxins in the body can affect the dermis and contribute to cellulite formation. Remove or limit toxins such as tobacco, alcohol, coffee and heavily processed foods containing high levels of sugar and chemical additives. Make sure you drink plenty of water.

#KHA : Ask yourself why you smoke ? Why you drink ? I asked myself about my sweet addiction saying “It’s not my fault I have a sweet tooth!” Yeah right that very sweet tooth causes tooth decay & health damage , so I stopped my daily “Juice” intake and replaced it with water. Stopped my chocolate romance & coffee love , because when I asked what value they add to my system , the answer was : “DOLOLO” ! They do nothing for me!

6. USE HERBS : 

Try herbs. Dandelion leaf tea helps reduce fluid retention, as well as helping to flush toxins from the body. You can also use dandelion leaves in salads or fresh juices. Ginkgo biloba, a herbal preparation from the dried leaves of the ginkgo tree, helps boost circulation.

#KHA : Damn ! What on earth is THIS DANDELION LEAF TEA ?! I better do my research & get on it ! Have you tried it ? Please share your experience with us .

7. SKIN CARE : 

External treatments such as coffee scrubs can improve circulation and reduce signs of cellulite. Use a coffee scrub twice a week. Moisten your skin under the shower, turn the water off, rub coffee granules into the affected areas for a few minutes, then rinse off.

#KHA : Finally , a use for coffee I could get addicted to ! Shall we try this & then walk around with the coffee aroma on our thighs … LOL! Tag line –

It was so good , we want to share it with you and do even better by bringing this health & fitness Indaba movement to YOU !

Live interview with Weekend Wake Up We started pretty early and the turn out this year was beyond fantastic! Thank you ladies for the Love and energy ! Thank you to the ETV news channel’s breakfast show WEEKEND WAKE UP for brilliant coverage.

Women in Focus DTFIB Mam Siphiwe Vilakazi a food missionary kicked things off focusing on debunking health myths , some true facts about sugar and Emotional intelligence. What was most exciting was the Q&A we had with the guests ! Just incredibly informative!

My lovely Sheila made a surprise appearance

We took non stop pics DTFIB Pastor Thabisho Salome dealt with Sugar , Caffeine & milk ! Did you know that sugar & Milk mixed together turns into alcohol in your system! Do some research, it’s mind blowing. The good pastor also touched on kids health . I personally enjoyed the healthy banter between the two pastors Mam Siphiwe Vilakazi & Pastor Salome plus our invited guests chiming in here & there … It was brilliantly fun!

DANCE TO FITNESS IN ACTION

It’s amazing how young the age 40 and even 50 starts looking when you allow yourself to age naturally ! What I mean is that we are aging ourselves UNNATURALLY by our bad habits , choice of food , behavior such as not getting enough sleep & negative uninspiring thoughts !

 

If we CHANGE this … we will start looking and feeling better about our selves & ofcourse age better !

Breakfast is served DTFIB Just starring at the table made us all so hungry and our awesome St Andrews Chef Blessed was ready just in time for us to chow down ! The menu included hot and cold meals , fruits , salad , freshly beaked bran muffins and so much more !

As always … there is NO Dance to Fitness Indaba without the DANCE TO FITNESS session by Khabodacious & Dj BjZee was dishing out only the best in local and international music ! There was Yoga in the mix & the ladies enjoyed experiencing their bodies through yoga!!

WHAT IS OBESITY & WHEN DID IT BEGIN

It’s everywhere. Wherever you look you will find someone overweight, or even obese. Children are no exception. They, too, are being plagued by obesity. How did we get to this point? More importantly, why did we get to this point?

Thousands of years ago, humans were nomads, that is, they never settled in one place. They would travel from place to place, typically seasonally, in search of food and water. However, everything changed with the arrival of agriculture and cities. Humans became sedentary. They no longer had to travel in search of food, now food came to them.

Why did this represent a problem ? 

– Humans were designed to accumulate corporal fat to be used in times of need. 

– Today, most people don’t really have the need to accumulate corporal fat, since food is available 24/7. 

– We live in an environment that offers an abundance of food. In medical terms, this is called an #Obesogenic environment. 

– In this type of environment, the genes that were once responsible for keeping us alive, are now the ones responsible for keeping us fat. 
– Of course, not only genes are to blame. We are #overeating, and #exercise is almost out of our vocabulary. 
– This has turned into such an epidemic that around 500 million people around the world are considered obese.

Ok back to #Banting … It was recently made popular by professor #TimNoakes in his book “The Real Meal Revolution” ! Tim really believes that this way of eating gets your body to switch Burning #Carbs for energy to Burning #Fat ! Interesting. 

Tim Noakes’ eating plan was first prescribed in 1861 by a Harley Street surgeon Mr William Harvey with great success to a corpulent London undertaker, Mr William Banting, thus it is more appropriately named the Harvey/Banting diet. 

In time the term to ‘bant’ was introduced into the English language. It referred to the use of this low carbohydrate diet for weight loss. 

Indeed ‘Banting’ was the standard treatment for weight loss in all the major European and North American medical schools for nearly 100 years until it suddenly went out of fashion after 1959 when it was written out of all the major medical and nutritional textbooks, to be replaced with its polar opposite, the currently popular low fat, high carbohydrate, ‘heart healthy’ diet.

10 GOLDEN RULES OF BANTING : 

1. Remember: this is not a high protein diet. It’s a high fat, protein, low carb way of eating.

2. Choose real foods that look like what they are, and cook them from scratch. ( Kha: I don’t believe in cooking most food- love Raw!)

3. Fat is not the enemy. Enjoy it! (Kha: Amafutha on a daily ?! NGIYALA)

4. Eat only when you are hungry; eat until you are satisfied – then stop.
5. Don’t eat when you’re not hungry. You won’t die if you occasionally skip a meal you don’t feel like eating.
6. Stop snacking. You won’t need to – it’s just a habit.
7. No sugar. It’s an addiction, and it’s probably best to go cold turkey. But if you need to make it a transition, substitute with Stevia, Zylitol or Erythritol – NOT artificial sweeteners. (Kha: just delete Sugar , no replacements! Body don’t need it!)
8. No grains of any kind. (Kha: ANEVA ! Whole grains are NB. Brown rice , Millet , Oats)
9. No (or very, very little) fruit. Think of it as a sweet rather than a health snack. (Kha: fruits are the only natural sugars out there ! We need!)

10. Embrace eggs. They’re healthy, satisfying and very good for you. (Kha: Free Range eggs)

WOW ! This just makes me realize that I’m not the “Banting type” and that finding the “correct diet” for your body / body type is really up to YOU ! 
Yes it’s good to do Reseach , ask questions , have Health Debates … But at the end of the day … YOU are the CEO of your Body … Make an informed decision !
